Everyone remembers their first car. They’re often a few years old, well used and flirting with the big scrapyard in the sky.
Gumtree says there are plenty of examples that would fit the bill for sale on its site and has listed the 10 cars most commonly advertised for less than £1,000.
However, not all of them – despite the low purchase price – would be affordable for someone who has just torn up their L-plates.
That’s because the average insurance premiums for some are more than three times the vehicle purchase price.

The average year of these less-than-a-grand Fords is 2004, meaning a relatively small sum will buy you a first generation car that was previously a UK best seller and in 1999 was voted European Car of the Year.
However, new drivers should run a few insurance quotes before thinking this be a cheap start to their motoring careers.

The average premium is £1,523, according to the the price comparison site – that’s 52 per cent more than the car would cost.

‘If your budget is £1k and under, it’s not about the specs or fancy toys.
‘As a rule with any vehicle purchase, always look for the lowest mileage and fewest owners to get the best car you can afford.’
