The pound slipped briefly below $1.30 before edging back up after UK retail sales figures for June came in below forecasts. The figures for the whole quarter were good though, with growth of 2.1 per cent.
Profits at Sports Direct tumbled 72.5 per cent to £77m last year, as the Mike Ashley-owned chain suffered losses of £85.4m on its holding in Debenhams.
Energy giant SSE warned today that costs of around £80m relating to higher gas prices and the UK hot weather could impact its full-year earnings.
