Ahmed Bashir, Director of the UK Department for International Trade, commented that he believes that Nigerian entrepreneurs living overseas can make a huge difference for Nigeria. He sees them as an asset because of their collective desire to return ideas and resources they develop and mine overseas to Nigeria, to help their homeland to recover and grow.
“Nigeria’s diaspora is an asset that can make a big difference in Nigeria. Our interviews with Nigerian entrepreneurs indicate that the diaspora have a keen interest in transferring business ideas and practices from the UK into Nigeria,” Bashir said.
One of Bashir’s goals is to guide overseas Nigerians to have an even bigger impact on the Nigerian economy, although he gave no specifics as to how that could be accomplished.
He does believe that the UK stands firmly behind the bilateral trade agreement in place between the two countries.
