An unlikely character has entered the battle for control of Stobart Group.

Former Boyzone singer Ronan Keating has spoken out in support of ousted former chief executive Andrew Tinkler, who the boyband heart-throb describes as a friend.

Tinkler wants to kick out Stobart Group chairman Iain Ferguson and replace him with retail billionaire Philip Day.

Keating’s support followed a statement by William Stobart, the son of the founder of the trucking empire, criticising Ferguson and the chief executive Warwick Brady for their ‘vindictive campaign’ against Tinkler.

The Life Is A Rollercoaster singer, a spotter of Stobart lorries, tweeted about Tinkler: ‘The company would not be where it is without him.’

Stobart has donated thousands of pounds to a charity set up by Keating.

Fund manager M&G is trying to put together a last-minute peace deal at Stobart Group with City heavyweight Allan Leighton in the chair.
