Risk of insurers refusing fire claim?

There’s been no fire, so this is a hypothetical.

My in laws have a gas cooker. When frying, e.g. an egg, they put newspaper on the stove top to catch the oil splashes. This seems insanely risky to me! If the worst happened and there was a fire, could the insurance company claim they were grossly negligent and not pay out?

Cheers.
