Endorsement: Joanna Lumley is featured on Utility Warehouse’s website
A utility supplier promoted by actress Joanna Lumley is being investigated by the energy watchdog over the way it treats people in debt.
Utility Warehouse installed 1,534 pre-payment meters in 2016 to recover debt. Its rate of meters installed under warrant in 2017 was higher than average, Ofgem said.
The regulator is looking at whether it is installing pre-payment meters appropriately, and whether it does enough to help customers who are in debt.
It said the probe does not mean it has found wrongdoing.
Utility Warehouse supplies landline, broadband, gas and electricity to 600,000 people.
It is owned by Telecom Plus and run by chief executive Andrew Lindsay, who won gold rowing for Britain at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
Lumley is featured on its website in promotional videos for the company.
