Judith McKenna, senior executive at Asda’s parent Walmart
Mike Coupe has been the face of the Sainsbury-Asda deal, but Middlesbrough-bred Judith McKenna, now a senior executive at Asda’s parent Walmart, will be one of the key powerbrokers at the new grocery giant.
Now based at Walmart’s American headquarters, her stellar career has taken her from Teesside to the heights of the US business world.
The 51-year-old has made it on to Fortune magazine’s list of the top 50 businesswomen three times – and that was before she was promoted in January to run retail giant Walmart’s international division, which includes Leeds-based Asda.
McKenna is responsible for 770,000 staff and 6,400 stores and will now closely monitor the merger of Asda with its larger rival Sainsbury’s.
Walmart will have two seats on the new company board and McKenna will certainly have plenty of ideas on how Asda should be run.
